When an update ends at a black screen or startup error, diagnose the drive and preserve your data before taking irreversible steps.
Record the symptom
Note whether the Mac reaches the login screen, shows a question mark, restarts repeatedly, or reports a disk error. Disconnect nonessential accessories and try a normal restart once. A long first boot after an update can be normal, so avoid cutting power repeatedly while progress is still advancing.
Enter the correct Recovery environment
On Apple silicon, shut down and hold the power button until startup options appear, then choose Options. On an Intel Mac, use the documented startup key combination. From Recovery, Disk Utility can check the startup disk and macOS can be reinstalled. Which version is offered can depend on the model and how Recovery was started.
Protect data before destructive actions
If the internal disk is visible, run First Aid and follow Apple’s guidance. A reinstall of macOS is different from erasing the disk, but an existing backup remains the safest protection against a failing drive or an unexpected error. Do not select Erase or Erase All Content and Settings as a diagnostic step. If the drive is missing or making errors, prioritize professional help and your backup.
Restore the right way
For a replacement or newly installed system, Migration Assistant can transfer personal files, apps, and settings from a Time Machine backup. For one deleted file after the Mac is working, restore only that file. If the backup itself fails to mount, do not overwrite your remaining copy while troubleshooting.
Escalate with useful details
Bring the exact startup symptom, Mac model, macOS build if known, Disk Utility result, and date of the last successful backup. That makes Apple Support or a technician much more effective than trying random Terminal commands from a forum.
The first fork: disk visible or missing
Disk Utility should show the internal storage and volumes. If it does, run the repair guidance and record the result; if the disk is absent, repeatedly reinstalling macOS will not fix a missing device. Apple’s Recovery tools differ between Apple silicon and Intel Macs, so follow the instructions for the actual model. A flashing question mark has a narrower meaning than a generic black screen and should be diagnosed accordingly.
Reinstall is not erase
The Recovery window offers several tools near each other. Reinstall macOS targets the system installation, while Erase in Disk Utility removes data on the selected volume. Read the exact action and selected disk before accepting any prompt. A reinstall is still a significant change, so make sure the backup is available. If your data is irreplaceable and no backup exists, seek help before any operation that writes heavily to a failing disk.
After the Mac starts again
Confirm the user account and local files, then run Software Update and check the macOS build. Reconnect peripherals one at a time, restoring essential apps from trusted vendors. If you migrated from a backup, inspect a few representative documents and photos rather than assuming the transfer covered every folder. Keep the old disk or backup untouched until you have verified the replacement system.
Make a backup, note what you changed, and follow your organization’s policy on managed Macs.
