You click a track and wait. The waveform takes seconds to appear, browsing stalls, or the whole library feels sluggish. At home that’s annoying. Before a set, it’s a real problem.

In most cases the cause isn’t rekordbox itself but where your music is and how the Mac reaches it. These five checks go from most to least likely, and none of them touches your tracks, cues or beatgrids.

1. Are your tracks really on this Mac?

This is the most common cause of slow loading. If your music lives in a cloud-synced folder, the file might not be on your disk at all until rekordbox asks for it.

  • iCloud Drive with Desktop & Documents syncing and Optimize Mac Storage turned on can quietly remove local copies of files you haven’t opened recently. Each track then downloads when you load it.
  • Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive folders set to online only work the same way.

In Finder, look for a cloud icon next to your music files or folders. If you see one, select the folder, then Control-click and choose Download Now or the sync app’s equivalent of available offline. Better still, keep your DJ library in a folder that isn’t cloud-synced at all, such as the Music folder with iCloud optimisation off, or a dedicated drive.

Don’t move music folders in Finder to fix this. rekordbox tracks files by location, and moved files show up as missing. Use rekordbox’s own tools to relocate files if you need to.

2. Is the drive asleep or slow?

If your library is on an external SSD or hard drive:

  • Hard drives spin down when idle, and the first track after a pause can take several seconds. Check System Settings > Energy or Battery > Options for a setting to put hard disks to sleep when possible, and turn it off.
  • Plug the drive directly into the Mac, not through an unpowered hub or a long adapter chain.
  • Avoid network drives and NAS storage for a performance library.

3. Does rekordbox still have access?

After a macOS update, privacy permissions sometimes need approving again. If rekordbox can’t read a folder or drive, loading can stall, or tracks appear as missing.

Open System Settings > Privacy & Security and check:

  • Files & Folders: rekordbox should have access to the locations your music is in, including Removable Volumes if you use an external drive.
  • Full Disk Access: if your setup needs it, make sure rekordbox is listed and switched on.
  • Local Network: if you connect to players over a network, make sure rekordbox is allowed here.

Quit and reopen rekordbox after changing any of these.

4. Is sync or streaming competing for it?

Library sync features and streaming tracks both depend on your connection. While a large sync is running, or on slow Wi-Fi, loading can slow down. Let any sync finish at home before the gig, and download or cache streamed tracks you plan to play, if your service allows it. Don’t count on venue Wi-Fi.

If only some tracks are slow, and they load quickly the second time, the stored analysis data may be the problem. Other DJs have reported that re-analysing affected tracks fixed slow loads. Before re-analysing, back up your library from rekordbox’s File menu, and lock any beatgrids you have edited by hand so analysis can’t overwrite them.

5. Is the Mac busy with something else?

  • After a macOS update, Spotlight and Photos can re-index for hours or days, using the disk and processor in the background. Our guide to Spotlight indexing explains how to check.
  • Low Power Mode reduces performance. Check System Settings > Battery, and run your set plugged in.
  • Activity Monitor shows what is using the CPU and memory. Close browsers and other heavy apps before you play.

Also check compatibility. As of late September 2026, rekordbox hadn’t yet published a macOS 27 compatibility statement; its latest version was listed as compatible with macOS 26 Tahoe. If you gig regularly, keep your performance Mac on a version the developer supports.

Before your next set

  • Load a dozen tracks from different folders and drives at home, on the same setup you’ll use at the venue.
  • Back up your library.
  • Don’t update macOS, rekordbox or controller firmware in the days before a gig.

The short version

Slow track loading in rekordbox on a Mac is usually about storage and access, not the app. Make sure your music is stored locally and not in an optimised cloud folder, keep drives awake and connected directly, recheck privacy permissions after updates, let sync finish before playing, and make sure the Mac isn’t busy indexing. None of these checks touches your tracks, cues or grids.
